Buy LED Tube Lights NZ – Replace Magnetic & Electronic Ballasts Easily
Share
If you're ready to upgrade your fluorescent fittings, GreenLED offers safe and efficient LED tube lights NZ customers trust. But before you begin, it's important to understand the type of ballast in your current fittings – either magnetic ballast with starter or electronic ballast. This helps determine the right LED tube installation method for your space.
🔎 Two Types of Ballasts in Fluorescent Fixtures
1. Magnetic Ballast (With Starter)
This is the older, more common type in New Zealand homes and garages. It includes a cylindrical starter located near the tube. You’ll usually hear a “click” when the light starts up, and there may be a brief flicker.
To install LED tubes in these fittings:
- Remove the old fluorescent tube
- Remove or bypass the magnetic ballast and starter
- Install your single-ended power LED tube as per wiring guide
Note: This should be done by a qualified electrician to ensure safety and compliance.
2. Electronic Ballast (No Starter)
This newer type is found in more modern fixtures. It does not use a starter, and the ballast is built into the fitting. It typically provides instant start-up without flickering.
For LED conversion:
- You must fully bypass the electronic ballast
- Rewire the fixture to connect directly to mains power on one end
- Use only single-ended LED tubes that are compliant in NZ
Again, always use a licensed electrician when modifying fixtures.
💡 Why Single-Ended LED Tubes Are Best for NZ
At GreenLED, we only supply single-ended LED tubes because they are safer and meet New Zealand electrical standards. These tubes are powered from one end only, reducing installation error and increasing protection against electric shock.

💬 FAQ – LED Tube Lights NZ
How do I tell if my fixture has a magnetic or electronic ballast?
If there’s a starter (a small white cylinder), it’s magnetic. If not, and the tube lights up instantly with no flicker, it’s likely electronic.
Can I install these LED tubes myself?
Installation should always be done by a qualified electrician, especially when bypassing ballasts or modifying fittings.
Do you have both 1200mm and 1500mm LED tubes?
Yes! We stock both common sizes to fit standard NZ fluorescent fittings.
